What Medicare Part D Covers ?

Your prescription drugs are covered by Medicare Part D coverage.  A formulary is a list of the medications that each plan covers.  It is divided into tiers, usually according to generic, name brand, and so on.

What does Medicare Part D cover?

A formulary, or list of drugs it covers, is a part of any Medicare Part D plan. Medicare stipulates that the plan must provide at least two medications from each class. Each plan also covers all or almost all of the following groups of prescription medications:

  • antidepressants

  • antipsychotics

  • anticonvulsants

  • immunosuppressants

  • cancer prevention drugs

  • medicines for HIV/AIDS

Common vaccinations to ward against disease are also covered by Part D plans.

What drugs doesn’t Part D cover?

Any medications that Original Medicare covers for you are not covered by prescription drug plans. The following drugs are among others that Part D normally does not cover:

  • any weight growth or weight loss medications

  • hormonal contraception

  • nonprescription drugs

  • medicine for erectile dysfunction

  • cosmetic drugs

It is uncommon for a Part D carrier to provide these drugs, but you might discover one. The list provided above is not exhaustive. You have the right to request an exemption if you truly believe you need a medication that is not listed on a formulary you would prefer to be on.
