Medicare plans aren’t one-size-fits-all, and your healthcare needs can change over time. The good news? Changing your Medicare plan is easier than you might think! Whether you want better coverage, lower costs, or access to different providers, this guide will walk you through how and when to switch plans.

When Can You Change Your Medicare Plan?

1. Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

🗓️ October 15 – December 7 every year this is the most common time to switch plans. During AEP, you can:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C)

  • Switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare

  • Change from one Medicare Advantage or Part D plan to another

  • Enroll in or drop a Part D prescription drug plan

2. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

🗓️ January 1 – March 31 If you're already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can:

  • Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan

  • Return to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan

3. Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

You may qualify for an SEP due to specific life events, such as:

  • Moving to a new area

  • Losing employer coverage

  • Becoming eligible for Medicaid or Extra Help

  • Your current plan changes its contract with Medicare

Steps to Change Your Medicare Plan

Step 1: Review Your Current Plan

Ask yourself:

  • Are my doctors still in-network?

  • Are my prescriptions covered?

  • Have premiums, copays, or benefits changed?

Step 2: Compare New Plans

Use Medicare.gov or work with a trusted Medicare advisor to:

  • Compare costs, coverage, and provider networks

  • Check plan star ratings and reviews

Step 3: Enroll in Your New Plan

Once you've found the right plan:

  • Enroll online at Medicare.gov

  • Call 1-800-MEDICARE

  • Work with a licensed Medicare agent (like Lindbergh and Associates!)

Your new coverage will begin on January 1 (if you enrolled during AEP) or the first of the following month (if enrolled during an SEP or other qualifying period).

Tips for a Smooth Transition

  • 📋 Keep records of your plan changes and confirmation numbers

  • 💊 Refill prescriptions before switching to avoid coverage gaps
