Medicare Advantage for Veterans

Veterans' Medicare Advantage may not seem required for retirees who are already covered by TRICARE or VA health insurance, but it may be more helpful than you think.

You are authorized to combine Medicare Advantage with TRICARE and VA health coverage, even if some medical insurance can be constrained. We'll discuss how they can cooperate to guarantee that you have practical and efficient healthcare coverage.

Medicare Advantage and VA combination

You must must have both Medicare Parts A and B in order to enroll in a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan. The VA in any case advises you to do it.

The same fundamental coverages are offered by MA plans together with additional benefits that Original Medicare does not. Later, we'll talk about that a bit more. But here's how this Medicare Advantage and VA combination can best serve you:

  • Medicare Advantage programs provide all of your needs under a single, practical package.

  • There may occasionally be long waits at VA facilities or distances to go.

  • VA health insurance eligibility is not assured and is subject to change.

  • The benefits and flexibility of your healthcare are increased by adding an MA plan.

  • Medicare Advantage plans put an out-of-pocket maximum on your healthcare, something Original Medicare doesn’t do

  • It also covers you if you’re on a vacation outside of the United States

Medicare Advantage benefits

MA plans are required by Medicare to provide the same benefits of Parts A and B. That is inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility, hospice, lab tests, surgery, home health care, outpatient care, medical equipment, and some preventative services.

However, Advantage plans can provide additional benefits like:

  • Adult day-care services

  • Dental

  • Fitness memberships

  • Hearing

  • Nutrition programs

  • Over-the-counter drugs

  • Services and supports for those with chronic conditions

  • Transportation to doctor visits

  • Vision

  • Wellness programs

Benefits you are eligible for will depend on your area and plan providers.
